Maintenance Hints to Prevent Tarnish on Gold Plated Chains

You need to protect gold plated jewelry from tarnishing if you want to maximize its lifespan and keep it looking as good as possible. The following are five things you can do to properly maintain a gold plated chain so that it doesn't become tarnished over time:

Use acid-free paper if you need to store your jewelry with tags, cards, or other paper goods

You may like to label your jewelry to store it or you may store it in a jewelry box with a paper liner. If this is the case, you should know that paper typically contains acid that can cause tarnish.

Always use acid-free paper if you need to store your jewelry in a container that includes any paper components.

Place no-tarnish strips in whatever compartment you use to store your jewelry

At a jeweler's shop or online, you can purchase no-tarnish strips that will prevent gold plated jewelry in storage from developing tarnish.

If you us these strips, remember that you need to regularly change your strips because they will gradually use their effectiveness over time.

Clean your chain using dishwasher detergent occasionally

Residue that can build up on gold plated jewelry over time can cause tarnish if it is not periodically removed. You can therefore prevent tarnish by regularly cleaning your jewelry.

One of the most effective ways to remove residue without increasing the risk of tarnish is to clean your jewelry with dishwashing detergent. Use warm water and a mild detergent and you can soak jewelry in the resulting mixture.

You can also lightly polish your jewelry with a gentle microfiber cloth to remove any residue that stays on your jewelry after it is soaked.

Store your gold plated chain around pieces of chalk and regularly change the chalk

If you don't have no-tarnish strips to prevent tarnish on a gold plated chain, you can use chalk as a substitute. Like no-tarnish strips, chalk works to absorb particles in the air that cause tarnish.

As with no-tarnish strips, chalk needs to be changed occasionally to continue working effectively at preventing tarnish.

Use baking soda on your gold plated chain when you clean it

Including baking soda when you clean your jewelry will help remove residue and clean away grime. You can put either baking soda on a toothbrush with soft bristles to gently clean gold plated jewelry in a way that will minimize the risk of tarnish development.
